IDrum is a great drum machine, and it works great with GarageBand on your Mac. Even without buying an expensive DAW, you can use iDrum to do your drum track in your home recordings. A good drum beat can add a lot to any song. It can be hard to make a custom beat for a home recording or music project, and a good drum machine can help.

GarageBand falls a little bit short when compared to other beat making softwares available in terms of allowing individuals to full customize their own beats. Other programs like BTV Solo, Dub Turbo, and FL Studio are geared towards helping producers create different styles of beats, and many of the loops and instruments included in these applications are specifically made for hard-hitting trap sounds. Of course, the three programs aren’t free, so GarageBand still dominates the market for casual music creators. FL Studio does offer a free demo however, and I downloaded the trial to experiment with the program. As much as I would like to be able to use one of the softwares above, I decided that the next best alternative to continuing my exploration of GarageBand would be to buy a drum kit that contains many of the trap sounds that I would like to use. I found a website called HexLoops where I could download a drum kit made by a DJ that has many of the basic sounds that I was looking for, like the dub horns and deep base tones. Whats nice about HexLoops is that the kit I bought is built specifically for GarageBand, so I didn’t have any issues transferring the loops to GarageBand. The following beat is my first attempt at creating a trap song using the new loops.

For this beat, I used a synth loop that sounds similar to an electric piano, and was able to record a simple 5 note pattern through musical typing. I then included an actual piano loop to add another layer to the melody, which consisted of recording a 2 note pattern in different keys. For the bass, I used one of the prerecorded dub loops in the kit, and then added some snare drum and hi-hat sounds. This was first my go at using the new drum kit, and hopefully I can add more interesting features in my next song like adjusting time signatures to speed up portions of the beat to produce a “drop.”
